Lofoten works well with kids if you pick a base that keeps drives short and gives everyone space. In Reine, a playground and a 9-hole disc golf course are right next to the house. In Lyngvær, two bathrooms and a washer and dryer make life with a family easier. Both houses have three bedrooms for up to six guests.
Kids don't care about the famous viewpoint. They care about the playground next door. Good news: in Reine you get both.
Which house for which family
Reine – for families who want the west: the peaks, the fjord, the boat to Vindstad. A playground and a 9-hole disc golf course are right next to the house, which buys a lot of goodwill after a long day. Three bedrooms, five beds, one bathroom, a loft under the roof. More: the house in Reine.
Lyngvær – for families who want calm and short drives: on the shore in the middle of the islands, about 15 minutes by car from Henningsvær. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms, so the morning does not turn into a queue, plus a washer and dryer for whatever the beach did to the trousers. More: the house in Lyngvær.
Short outings that work
- The Vindstad boat from Reine: a boat trip is an event in itself. The walk to Bunes beach from there is longer – judge by your kids' legs.
- Beaches: wide sand, cold water, endless digging. Pick a calm day.
- Harbours: Reine, Hamnøy, Henningsvær – boats, fish racks, gulls.
- Reinebringen is close to 2,000 steep steps. Great for teenagers who like a challenge; with small kids, think twice. Closed in winter conditions.

Weather and packing
Lofoten weather changes fast, in every season. Layers beat one thick coat; waterproof trousers and boots beat almost everything. In winter add proper hats, gloves and something reflective for the dark afternoons. The sauna is how the North warms up afterwards – see the sauna by the fjord; kids and sauna is a family decision.
When to go
Summer brings the midnight sun – useful for long days, less useful at bedtime, so bring a sleep mask. Late August to mid-April has dark nights for the northern lights. See best time to visit.
Good questions
Is Lofoten good for kids?
Yes – beaches, short walks, boats, fishing harbours and a lot of space. Plan short drives and flexible days; the weather decides more than the plan.
Which house is better for families?
Reine has the playground and disc golf next door and the west's famous scenery. Lyngvær has two bathrooms, a washer and dryer and short drives across the middle of the islands. Both have three bedrooms.
