Winter

Snow on the peaks and on the shoreline, light like nowhere else – and the aurora overhead.

Short answer

Winter in Lofoten runs roughly from December to March. Around midwinter the sun stays below the horizon for a few weeks near Reine (about mid-December to early January), but you still get hours of blue and pink twilight. From January the days lengthen fast. Expect temperatures around freezing, wind, snow and dark nights for the northern lights. Rental cars come with winter tyres; drive carefully.

Why come in winter

Because of the light. In the weeks around midwinter, the sun never quite rises – instead, the sky glows blue, pink and orange for hours. By February and March, the days are long again, the mountains are white to the waterline, and the nights are still dark enough for the northern lights. Many people (us included) think this is Lofoten at its best.

Polar night – not as dark as it sounds

Near Reine, the sun stays below the horizon from about mid-December to early January. It's not pitch-black: around midday there are several hours of soft twilight. Cosy is the point – candles, a sauna, a long dinner.

Skrei and stockfish

From around January, the Arctic cod – skrei – comes down from the Barents Sea to spawn in Lofoten's waters. It's been the heart of life here for over a thousand years. Fishing boats crowd the harbours, and from late winter the wooden racks fill up with drying cod: stockfish. Try fresh skrei in a local restaurant if you get the chance.

What to do

  • Northern lights watching (see our northern lights guide)
  • Winter photography in Reine, Hamnøy and Henningsvær
  • Sauna, then a roll in the snow
  • Short winter walks and snowshoeing (with local knowledge)
  • Museums in Kabelvåg, Å and at Borg
  • Arctic surfing – or watching it – at Unstad

Weather and driving

The coast is milder than its latitude suggests – temperatures often sit around freezing – but wind and wet snow make it feel colder. Pack windproof layers and good boots, ideally with ice grips.

Roads are well maintained but can be icy, narrow and dark. Rental cars come with winter tyres. Drive slowly, keep your distance, don't stop on the road for photos, and check road conditions before longer drives.

Good questions

Is it dark all day in winter?

Not quite. Around Reine the sun stays below the horizon for a few weeks around the winter solstice (roughly mid-December to early January), but there are still several hours of soft blue and pink twilight every day. From January the light returns fast.

How cold does it get in winter?

Milder than you would expect above the Arctic Circle – the Gulf Stream keeps the coast relatively mild, and winter temperatures often hover around freezing. The wind is what makes it feel cold, so pack a windproof layer.

Is it safe to drive in Lofoten in winter?

Yes, with care. Rental cars in Norway come with winter tyres in season. Roads can be icy and narrow: drive slowly, keep your distance, and check road conditions and the forecast before longer drives.

When is northern lights season in Lofoten?

The aurora is active all year, but you need darkness to see it. In Lofoten that means roughly late August to mid-April. Clear skies matter more than the month.
