Reinebringen: How to Hike Lofoten's Most Famous Viewpoint

Short answer

Reinebringen is a short but very steep hike above Reine on a stone stairway of nearly 2,000 steps built by Sherpas from Nepal. Most fit hikers do it in a couple of hours round trip. Go early in the morning or late on a summer night to avoid the crowds. Don't go in winter conditions – the municipality closes the stairway when there's snow and ice.

If you've seen one photo of Lofoten, it was probably taken from Reinebringen: the village of Reine on its little islands, the fjord, the peaks all around. Our Reine house sits at the foot of it, so we get asked about this hike more than anything else.

The stairs

Reinebringen used to be a notoriously dangerous scramble on loose, eroded ground. Then a team of Sherpas from Nepal built a stone stairway up the mountainside – close to 2,000 steps. It's still steep and hard work, but it's safer and has stopped the erosion.

How hard is it?

Short but relentless. It's basically a giant staircase. If you're reasonably fit, it's fine – just slow down and take breaks. Your thighs will remember it the next day. The very top section above the stairs is narrower and rougher; be careful near the edge.

When to go

  • Summer (June–August): best conditions. During the midnight sun season, going late at night gives you warm light and far fewer people.
  • Early autumn and late spring: possible when the stairs are free of snow and ice – check the current status first.
  • Winter: don't. The municipality closes the stairway in winter conditions because of ice, snow and avalanche risk.

Practical tips

  • Start early or late. In July, mid-day crowds can be heavy.
  • Parking is very limited near the trailhead. If you're staying in Reine, walk.
  • Wear proper shoes – the stones can be wet and slippery.
  • Bring water and a windproof layer. It's always windier at the top.
  • Check the weather on yr.no. If the top is in cloud, you'll see nothing.
  • Respect the closure signs. They're there for a reason.

Good questions

How many steps does Reinebringen have?

Close to 2,000 – most sources give around 1,978. The stairway was built by Sherpas from Nepal and replaced an eroded, dangerous path.

Can you hike Reinebringen in winter?

No. In winter conditions the stairway is snow-covered and icy, with avalanche risk, and the municipality closes it. Check Moskenes municipality's information before you go in spring or autumn.

How long does the Reinebringen hike take?

It depends on fitness and crowds. Plan for a couple of hours round trip, plus time at the top.
